Well, I'm here!

I've finally made it onto the "blogosphere." And no, I don't think that I will ever use that term again after this post.

Why is this person writing a blog, you ask? Well, my reasons are sevenfold:

1. To bring the fruits of my writing into the realm of material that others actually find interesting.
As it stands, I write/draw in my journals about daily events and creative ideas (interesting to me and probably a select additional few) and I write largely technical reviews and papers about oceanography (again, interesting to me and hopefully a select additional few). For a member of a species that thrives on community and shared ideas, this level of contribution to the human experience is rather feeble.

2. To bring my writing habit into the realm of actual habit.
Good writing takes work and practice. I could always use the practice. It's that simple.

3. To keep in touch with people in my life who'd prefer to drop in on me semi-anonymously.
You know who you are, you lazy bastards. Just kidding. I think.

4. To explore creative means of communication. With feedback!
I am interested in many forms of communication -- writing, lecturing, photography, singing, drawing, fabric arts, these top a long list. Here is a forum to which I can bring a number of these media into the same context. Interaction with interested readers will help me see which I use well. Or maybe not so well. We'll see, won't we?

5. To force a focus on the remarkable in every day.
Even though it's #5, this one is important. If I am on the lookout for interesting things to share with others, I will be more inclined to seek out the beautiful/interesting/bizarre/hilarious and as a consequence, live a fuller day and thus a fuller life. Seek and ye shall find, right?

6. It may turn out that I will be able to apply the blogging experience in my professional life down the line.
More on this point in a bit. This is (in part) where the "dream" comes in. You're nearly begging me to tell you what the heck I'm talking about right now, aren't you? Well... patience, grasshopper. All will be clear soon.

7. Finally, I am green with blogo-envy.
Yes. I could have written, "blog envy," but I like the sound of "blogo-envy." Doesn't roll off the tongue at all. I'll bet you just tried to say it in your head. And then out loud. Ha! I made you do that! But seriously, folks, I have seen so many beautiful and creative weblogs out there -- I just have to see what it's like. (This is very similar to point 4 above, but with a different flavor. ...Tangy?)

So... why are you reading?

#8. Because I'm Kate's best friend.
And she doesn't get to see me nearly as often as she'd like.
