July 2010: Itty-Bitty Goals
More...
For July, partially since I need to get back into the swing of things, and partly because I want to accomplish several small but important things, I am going to set several small goals. They are all important, but they are all tiny.
1. Ride my bike to work every day. It's the month of independence, and what with the whole oil spill and the weather FINALLY being nice, it's a good time to declare independence from my car for trips under five miles, or that don't require a ton of space to carry back groceries or something. So, for the rest of July, and for the rest of the summer, I will be riding my bike to work and around town.
2. Floss my teeth every night. This is a good one, since it's something that I should do anyway, but I have just never made it a habit. My first thought was that if I was going to set a goal of once a day, I should floss in the morning, but I think it would be more worthwhile to floss at night, since I'll have eaten lost of food by then, and also my nighttime brushing routine isn't such a strong habit, either (I usually remember/bother about 4/7 days of the week). So, this ought to be a double-whammy goal, getting me to brush twice every day AND floss. (My teeth are nice, I just don't have a very rigorous schedule. Don't judge me!)
3. Do at least one set of at least ten sit ups a day, every day. So far, I've done at least 15 a day, I just do them at my desk when I take a small break from work. It's a good goal because I usually do more like 15, which is still not much, but it takes only about a minute (if that) and is better than none a day. Plus, it's nice to move my core in a direction other than that required to maintain my hunched - over - keyboard posture all day.
So far: I am absolutely LOVING the bike ride. (Not a surprise, I love riding my bike.) I've gotten out of the habit because for 75% of the year, it's raining and I hate getting to work all soggy. But then, once you stop riding, it seems so much easier to drive to work. I only live three miles away from campus, so it's just really sad that I don't ride every chance I get.
The flossing is really a non-issue right now, I just need to make a conscious effort to fold it into my nighttime routine. I have no idea why it's not already a part of it.
The sit ups are fun! I have been doing them as soon as I get to work in the morning, since nobody is there yet and it's nice to do that sort of thing without a bunch of looky-loos. I will probably do another set as soon as I am done with this post, as I can feel my back tightening as I type.
